This is my first baitcast reel I've ever used and I think I'm hooked! I bought this reel mainly due to the Shimano name and reputation. The reel was quite easy to setup. I'm using Spider wire 30lb test (equivilant to 6lb mono) and I couldn't be happier with the casting ability.
In my opinion this is a very good reel to start baitcasting with at a moderate price level.

First Baitcaster

This is my very first baitcast reel. I had a few birdnests at first but once I learned how to set the brake and control the spool with my thumb it has performed excellently. I'm using 12lb fluorocarbon and can't be happier with the casting performance of this reel. I use it for every type of bass lure presentation. From flipping and pitching worms and jigs to cranking crankbaits and spinnerbaits. I even use it with live bait when fishing for striped bass in the CA Aqueduct.
My only complaint is that my fingers tend to slip off the nobs when they get wet due to the small nob size and the surface type.
If you have never used a baitcaster, don't be discouraged by the initial hurdle of learning how to avoid bird-nesting and don't automatically assume its a poor quality reel. The casting just takes getting used to and the reel has to be adjusted for the type of lure you are using just like every other baitcaster.
This is a great quality reel for a very reasonable price. I don't really see any reason why you wouldn't want to buy this if you're in the market for a new reel. .
