Daiwa Emcast Sport

Cheapest contender on the block

Ok, so the price is competitive for a reel this size. I like the folding handle and the cranking power. However, this reel does not speak quality. It is wobbly and not well balanced. Clearly, compromises were made here in workmanship and construction. Loads of plastic everywhere waiting to break and scratch. Those used to smoothness and robustness in a seawater reel will be disappointed. It just feels cheap. Because it is. My toddler will be playing with it soon.

Some part behind spool are cheap plastic.
The other free spool stuck while winding, Some times the handle folds while winding.
I wasn't expecting such product from Daiwa.

Lasted only a few weeks

After no more than 25 days of use, this EMCAST 5500 failed mechanically.
It sounds as if there were stripped gears and the spool will not raise and fall as it is reeled.

This reel is a TANK

This reel is by far the best I've ever owned. My only mistake was getting the largest of the options. It's massive but great for Carp, Catfish or any other big fish. Easy to fit in your vehicle the reel arm folds down and it hasn't failed me yet. Smooth casting and balanced retrieve. Reel Quality, but let me emphasize getting a smaller option. Line is expensive and this thing takes a LOT.

Started good, ended bad

This reel felt good, looked good, and I thought it would do that job. However after one season of surf fishing the gears began to slow up. I take care of my stuff so it wasn't due to lack of TLC.
After 1 season the handle stem literally broke in half. I can't possible explain how metal breaks in half like that but it did.

Great Value for the Money

I have always used Daiwa reels since they have held up over the test of time under many conditions. When I moved into surf casting I decided to try this reel and found it works great. When using braided line I put backing on half the spool and then my braided line since the reel holds so much. A great value for the money and now own three of them.

This is a strong and well built reel. Casts like a dream, and retrieves smoothly. The large handle gives you a lot of leverage. I use this for pier and surf fishing, and I am very pleased with my purchase.
