Wow this reel is awesome I bought the 2000 model to fish mainly for Smallmouth and it has performed beyond my expectations.
This is my first Daiwa reel I have owned and it was purchased mainly because I kayak fish and my reels get wet. I found other manufacturers don't offer a waterproof reel at this price point and lets just say I'm glad they don't because this reel has quickly became my favorite. I have used it twice a week since purchasing it over a month ago and it has been underwater and is usually wet during most of my fishing.
The waterproof drag and sealed body have kept the reel performing smooth well longer than other reels I have owned. I haven't had to worry about sand or water effecting the performance at all. I have landed a lot of Smallmouths with this reel including a 19.5" as well as numerous 14"-17" Smallies and Largemouths.
The drag has performed flawlessly and you can tell the quality is great.
I look forward to using this reel for many years I'm a proud member of Team Daiwa now

I bought the reel for my wife. We had been perch and bass fishing but she decided to try for Northern Pike.
I bought her this reel to replace the one from a chain store she had been using.
First trip out she landed two three-footers.
The reel performed flawlessly, very nice drag & fast retrieve. What a rush.
Next weekend we're going for four-footers.

poor line management

This reel was unable to lay the line properly. It look and feel great, has silky smooth operation, but the point above had ruined all the impression.
Besides,it turned out that this reel is significantly heavier than in description given(real weight is 8.5 oz,instead of 7.6 oz as stated on Daiwa.com, Procyon 1500).
Could not recommend this for a light spin application.

This reel is comparable to the Pfleuger Supreme and Shimano medium weight spinning reel in every instance.
Its drag is sufficient to stop a 6 # bass and a 15# Red.

Awesome reel

I am a huge Shimano fan and originally bought one of the new Stradic FJs to put on a St. Croix Rage rod. I returned the Stradic after using it a few times because it was not, in my opinion, worth the price tag. I picked up this new Procyon to replace the Stradic and fell in love with it. I had never fished with a Daiwa reel before, but this will not be my last. This reel is extremely smooth, well-balanced, and comfortable. I would highly recommend this reel, especially to those who have never used Daiwa.
I was pleasantly surprised, especially for the price, and I think that others out there may feel the same way.

bought this for a Canadian fly in trip (1500)...put on a ml Fenwick legacy rod i already had. What a great combo for walleye and even pike that were jig hungry. super light super smooth great drag and casted farther than anyone else in the group. used 6 pd seguar senshi...let my dad use it (he loves his johnny morris) and he preferred the daiwa, his first words were, "wow, this is nice"...only thing, WHERE IS THE EXTRA SPOOL?

Rock solid construction, engineering and overall bomb-proofness in a reasonably priced package. I use this reel for Salmonid pursuits;casting 1/2-3/4 oz. spoons from all access points into & out of L. Michigan: I've yet to be spooled &/or "fouled" via this machine's error. Running 10Lb. Fireline w/a fluorocarbon leader of equal or slightly lesser weight rating, linked strictly by a back-to-back uni-knot, hooking, fighting and landing quarry in the 15-25 Lb. range-some days CPR'd well over 15 fish-I have absolutely ZERO complaints.
