Primarily use this reel to cast live baits but could be a good reel to throw jigs for wahoo. Only used it for two yrs now and have caught 3 YFT over 100#. 50# Spectra to short 5-6' leader of 40-50# fluro. Great reel for the money.

Great reel for jigging

I bought the STTLD50-2SPD and put it on a Trevala rod for jigging grouper and amberjack. What a beast of a reel. I have no problems winching up big groupers from 200' - 250' and caught many amberjacks in the 50 to 75 lb range. It's never missed a beat. Now I did have to upgrade the rod, the Trevala was just outmatched by the pressure of the big fish and the reel. The XXX heavy Terez is the ticket. I should also mention that I have it spooled up with 100 lb Power Pro. And the setup is so light it's amazing. Use it all day and not get tired. It sounds like the gentleman from Canada may have had the spool locked down too tight.
I was so impressed that I bought my brother one for his 50th birthday.

Max power on Dorado, kings, and tuna. Have 500 yards of 65 lb braid top with 80 lb mono.
Works wonders.

Best little 2 speed I own

I bought the Daiwa 35 2 speed for my 30# outft for fishing offshore. I was not disappointed, basically 65# braid and a short 30# flouro topshot for baitfishing. Casts very well, shifting, when I had to which wasn't veryoften was very smooth. Gearing is very strong and well siuted for the fishing I do. I recently took it on a longer trip than I normally do, 7 days. They were suggesting that we use 40# minimum line so I switched out the topshot hoping the little reel would stand up to the larger fish. I was not disappointed catching tuna 40#+! Shifting was very smooth, and low gear was perfect for the bigger tuna and yellow tail that we caught!
The little Daiwa held up very well with drags performing flawlessly after multiple fish!
If you're looking for a small reel that can stand up to big fish, I highly recommend the Daiwa Saltist 2 speed reels!

Disappointed

I received the 30 Saltist lever drag reels, took it out of the box to look it over. It seemed smooth and looked OK but when I tried the lever it is rough and the lever dose not have ratcheting adjustment stops as other reels in it class have. I'm sending it back. I'm looking for the best small lever drag reel I can find for jigging Yellowtail. I have fished in 6 tournament with a star drag, winning prize money 5 times. I wish to up grade to lever drag.
