Great reel but mechanical issues

This is a fantastic reel, very smooth and excellent casting. However, about a year after using it (2 seasons) it started to develop a very bad grinding in the internals. Took it apart and all of the components are fine, cleaned it and it works OK again. Now it develops this heavy grinding every time I go out after a bit of use.
I have two models, the 2500 and 4000, this only happened to my 2500 which gets much more use. Hopefully Shimano will replace the reel.

Good at the beginning

Used this reel for super cold weather steelhead fishing on the Clearwater River for two winters. The reel was very smooth & teamed with Fireline caught a lot of fish. However, now, when the weather is really cold the drag does not work at all.
Will not buy another.

sedona ul

I have had the ul 500 for 2 years now. I have paired it with both a St Croix UL 5' and 3' ice rod. I t works great and has never failed me. It is a good inexpensive reel and serves me well. I plan on getting a 2500 for my longer light trout/crappie rods soon. Most complaints on reels come from people that are rough on there gear and don't maintain it. This reel comes highly recommended!

bail release sticks

2012-11-28T09:50:33

Smooth drag and light weight. Was very happy with this reel for first six to seven months and then the bail trip began to stick. Fortunately, Shimano stands behind their product and sent a brand new reel. Unfortunately, the bail trip on the new reel had a sticky spot just like the previous reel.
I upgraded to the Sahara and no problems since.
If you don't mind manually closing the bail, it's a very good reel, otherwise spend $20 more and get the Sahara.

Good perfance and value

This reel is fantastic and outperforms other reels in the price range. I like the arbor design that lets the line out smooth with little resistance. You can feel the difference when casting this reel compared to others in the price range. It also reels incredibly smooth with no wobble. The crank handle is big enough that you can get a firm grip. The anti-reverse clutch is instant with no noticeable play.
The drag system is very nice. The front tension system works very well and is consistent. When fish peel drag, it has a very minor wobble, but for the most part feels smooth for a reel under $100. The drag is also a little more quiet than most reels. That could be good or bad depending who you ask.
Time will tell how durable it is, but I have had it on a few trips in the rain, mud and snow and it still performs like new and has not froze in frigged temperatures yet. Like any reel, regular maintenance will keep it working at peak performance.
I would recommend this to someone who wants a bit of performance without making a substantial investment.

Great Value

I have actually bought 2 of these over the past 3 years; THE FIRST ONE WAS STOLEN! For the price there is no better quality than Shimano. It has amazingly smooth action and gearing. I have the Sedona 4000FD which is great because of its high capacity.
Don't be concerned with the fact that it only has 5 bearings; when it comes down to it, it is all about QUALITY not QUANTITY! And Shimano has the best bearings in the industry! I have bought other reels in the past because they had 9, 10, even 11 bearings and they were terrible.
These reels are well worth the money.

Junk

Just returned from my camp in Ontario. The drag on this reel is junk. Couldn't get any consistancy from it. One cast it is fine, next cast it doesn't even have a drag. It fails from cast to cast.
I will never buy another reel of this brand.
