This is a top notch reel for the surf. I have two TRQS5 that are Bail-Less. Preform flawlessly and I love the Bail-Less model because to me less stuff to break the better.
I fish for 5 weeks straight a year in the surf many times wading out chest deep in the water. Obviously my stuff gets pounded. These work flawlessly so far. Also, Penn should be commended for bringing it back to the USA. I am very saddened by the quality of many reels that where formally made in the USA but now are not.
They may look cosmetically the same but they are not. The foreign reels seem to do well for a while and then quality control then goes off the cliff. I have a buddy that repairs reels and that is his verdict also. My repair guy also has been telling me that parts for foreign reels are some time very tough to get (even for the new models) and that he is getting more and more foreign parts that do not fit correctly for even new reels.

Pros: Smooth casting, excellent workmanship, watertight, straightforward design, old school marine grade bronze internals, "less is more" in parts, USA made

Cons: Penn should try a polished body with clearcoat.
I finally decided to break down and get a sealed reel. I tried them all. I read Alan's review, and decided on the Penn TRQS7 after trying every major US made watertight reel, including some NOS VS reels. I don't just want a good reel, but also want to keep US people working. When I got my first of 2 TRQS7's, it was a first run production, that did not have the upgraded rotor arms, and additional spool sealing. It worked great with out the upgrades, but after contacting Tony, from Penn, I was able to do the upgrades myself from the parts sent to me by Penn.

In doing the upgrade on the 1st reel, I completely stripped the reel down on purpose. It's very obvious where Penn looked for the internal gearing. It looked just like my original chrome handled 750SS's, only better. A solid internal layout. Breadown and buildup were both a breeze to do, and with few tools. The upgrade took me less than 15 minutes. The 2nd reel was newer production, and did not need it.

Since my purchase, I've done nothing but fish this reel. Both at Montauk, and also on road trips up to the Canal. I have my TRQS7's mated to Lami SSU blanks in 10, and 11ft that I custom made myself. They cast smooth, do it over nice long distances, and lay the line on the spool really nice. The drag system is absolutely solid. I've had stripers on the hook between 20 and 37 lbs, and the reel performs as designed, and stated. At the end of the trips, I just rinse it down with fresh water at the site, and then spray it down with distilled water before drying it off.

All in all, this reel is going to outlive me. I think Penn did this one really well, and the best part is they stand solidly behind the reel with their customer service. Very happy with my 2 purchases
